Three OAHS juniors qualify for 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program

Oxford Area High School juniors Seth Allport, P.J. Reagan and Lauren Thomson have qualified for the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The three students are among 50,000 high scorers from approximately 1.5 million high school juniors throughout the United States who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test this past fall.

By qualifying for National Merit Scholarship recognition, each student will be referred to two colleges of his or her choice by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

In September, nearly a third of the 50,000 high scorers will be notified that they have qualified as National Merit Semifinalists, who represent the highest-scoring entrants in each state.  The remaining high scorers will receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise.

In February 2013, Semifinalists who meet academic and other requirements will be notified that they have advanced to Finalist standing. All National Merit Scholarship winners will be chosen from this group of Finalists based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments.

Seth, son of Julie and Eugene Allport, is a member of National Honor Society, the Academic Team and the Helping Hands community service club. He plays trombone in the concert and marching bands and was recently selected to perform in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association All-State Concert Band. He plans to study computer engineering in college, and his choices include Grove City College, Penn State and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

P.J., son of Dawn and William Reagan, is a member of the Academic Team and plays trumpet in the concert and marching bands. He plans to earn an associate’s degree at Delaware County Community College before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Lauren, daughter of Denise and Leif Thomson, is a member of the school chorus and plans to study neuroscience in college. Her choices include Johns Hopkins and Brown universities.
